‘COOL 2B QUEER’ AUSTRALIAN TOUR ANNOUNCED
Serviced today to Australian Commercial Radio is the single “Cool 2B Queer” by acclaimed Australian / Filipino musician Chela (also known as Chelsea Wheatley). The pop track produced by DNA (Jessica Mauboy, The Veronicas) was released late last year and has fast become an anthem, recently entering Triple J’s Top 3 Most Played chart last week.
Chela was inspired to write ‘Cool 2B Queer’ after meeting up with an old flame for lunch, years after their romance had ended. “During the time of our romantic exchange, she wasn’t ready to acknowledge what was going on publicly. Now suddenly, many years later in 2019 when it’s feeling more acceptable and more in-vogue to be queer, here she is ready to be open about it all. I left the restaurant and started walking down Sunset Boulevard in LA thinking ohhhhh now it’s … cool to be queer”.
Alongside the single, a music video was filmed on King Street in Newtown - a place renowned for its queer history and spirit, signifying a place of acceptance and belonging for Chela herself. Co-directed by Chela and Tilly Robba, the video offers a broader perspective on the lyrical content of the song, commenting on the commodification of queerness. Watch Video HERE
Chela shares: “Queer folx have waited forever for validation and safety, and now suddenly we’re seeing the stamp of approval all over branding and media within such a short space of time comparatively. It’s almost comical. And that’s the essence I hoped to encapsulate in the video.” Featuring local queer artists all styled in garments made from scratch, Chela is proud that this video embodies “the epitome of queerness; DIY, fluid ingenuity.”
Originally hailing from Fremantle, musician, songwriter, producer and filmmaker Chela (aka Chelsea Wheatley) has amassed over 20 million streams and is best known as one of Australia’s most adventurous musicians. Based in Los Angeles up until COVID struck, Chela has achieved much international acclaim releasing ‘Romanticise’ (co-produced with DCUP) and ‘Zero’ with French tastemaker label Kitsune, and beloved singles including ‘Delivery', ‘Handful Of Gold’ and ‘Bad Habit’.
Having made her mark on huge international festival line-ups, including Coachella and South By South West in Texas, Chela also announces the ‘Cool 2B Queer’ Australian tour, in support of her latest single of the same name.
Heading into a season of LGBTQIA+ visibility and celebration with Sydney WorldPride and Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras taking place this month, Chela is excited to be performing at key Pride events across the country, including Sydney WorldPride Series and Opening Night, Victoria’s Pride Street Party in Melbourne, Gaytimes Festival in Gembrook. The ‘Cool 2B Queer’ tour will also see Chela headline shows in Canberra, Brisbane, and Adelaide.
