20 years since Australia fell in love with her on Australian IdolRICKI-LEE has just released the fourth single from her highly anticipated fifth album ‘On My Own’ (out March 8). A brand-new spin on the KISS classic ‘I Was Made For Loving You’, an original song featuring an interpolation of the global classic – making it new, and familiar at the same time.

Ricki-Lee says, “There’s been a huge trend over the past 10 years with artists featuring classic songs, putting a modern spin on them, and writing a new song around these classic choruses or hooks. It’s fascinating to see kids discovering these classic old songs for the first time and thinking they’re original, but also seeing us ‘oldies’ fall in love with these songs all over again in a new way”.

Ricki-Lee and her co-writers and producers on the song Anthony Egizii & David Musumeci from DNA Songs, were putting the final touches on the album and decided it was missing something. Ricki-Lee explains, “We didn’t have that euphoric, uplifting dancefloor song on the album yet - so we decided to try and write something that we were calling ‘glitter disco pop’. We started playing with some ideas and had a verse & pre chorus, and when we got to the chorus one of us started singing the chorus of ‘I Was Made For Loving You’. We leaned into it, and it turned out VERY well and we ended up getting clearance from KISS to use the song, and once we got the green light from them, it was a no brainer. This song is so uplifting, and so much fun, and I’m proud of the way we’ve given a nod to one of the biggest songs in the world and respected the essence of both the original and the new song that we wrote around it”.

But to use the song, they had to give up all the publishing.  Ricki-Lee tells, “Even though we only used two lines from the Kiss song - we had to give up 100% of the publishing if we wanted to use it, and we weren’t allowed to be credited as songwriters at all. But it was just too good not to use – it worked so perfectly and really made the song!

The multi-platinum selling and ARIA Award nominated artist is releasing on March 8 her new album ‘On My Own’ through her own record label and owning her masters for the first time - and with two of the three singles previously released from the new album hitting #1 on the charts (On My Own & Ghost), the album is shaping up to be a huge hit, and well worth the 10 year wait for fans.

And with all this nostalgia in the air – it is only fitting that Ricki-Lee is touring at the end of 2024 with global superstars Take That & Sophie Ellis-Bextor for A Day On The Green.
